The final draw including schedule of match times will be posted this evening.

There are now 2 categories to this development tournament:

Inexperienced Players or First Timers

For beginners needing a geat supportive experience that has less pressure than a regular tournament to help them get started.

This category serves to assist clubs to enable students to have a go at a well organised but yet less formal tournament.  This is a great spring board or stepping stone for beginners to attend a higher level and more prestigious tournament like the Gold Coast Open and Brisbane Open.  This tournament is just one week before the Brisbane Open and is a great opportunity to have a practice to attend the Brisbane Open on Sunday 11 August.  Manual electronic scoring will be used with inexperienced or first time players.

The great benefits of this tournament for beginning players is:

*they get more than one contest as it is a round robin tournament

*players can stop during round if needed to unstress and be supported by their coach

*participants get a chance to do a less competitive tournament first

*they will have their first experience a low contact comp rather than starting on the full WTF rules

*shorter rounds, though 3 rounds, to help build confidence.

Experienced Players

For more experienced players who are needing the pressure of a competition environment to target certain skills without the cost and time of a regular tournament.

These athletes will also be getting the opportunity to be able to call “time out” during a round for special coaching.  These is very beneficial for development for higher level players who are trying new techniques in preparation for the Brisbane Open on Sunday 11 August and for the STA Nationals 13-15 September. Their preparation will be enhanced by a round robin experience that gives them plenty of court time while utilising “time out” for targeting skills and performance.

Daedo electronic chest protectors will be used for experienced players category.

The great benefits for experienced players is:

*round robin draw with multiple players and extended court time

*the use of “time out” for targeting skills each round

*international referee centre court to ensure quality rules interpretation

*more pressure than club or match play sparring for enhanced preparation for higher level comps.

For clubs it’s a great opportunity to:

*introduce new players and build your tournament squad

*attend a tournament where you get a specific time slot to attend for your contest

*see if a student is suitable to sparring tournaments

*let parents start on a tournament where there’s not a full day commitment

*reinforce for your members and parents that your sparring program is truly a development program

*ensure your experienced players get advanced sparring in places other than regular tournaments

This is a development tournament for WTF sparring athletes wanting to gain an introductory experience with modified rules.  All Queensland clubs are welcome to participate.  Please contact Master Damien O’Flaherty if you are wanting your club to participate by going to the “Contact Us” page on this website and sending an email.
