As a Brisbane Taekwondo academy we know that if there is one aspect of Martial Arts training that some children and teenagers often find difficult it’s learning the traditional Poomse or patterns as they are often called. The “Yin Yang” is clearly ever so present around us … because if there is one thing that can help children develop concentration skills there’s no doubt that it it’s Poomse!
So what’s with the “Yin Yang? Well, why does it so often seem in life that the hard things to achieve are often the most valuable. We’ll probably not answer that big question in this article, however there is no doubt that the tough things in Martial Arts training often deliver the greatest personal benefits to everyone. And one of the tough things for kids is concentration. There’s not been a parent I have ever spoken to who hasn’t thought that they would like their child to concentrate more, or at the important times, or at school, or when people are talking to them … the examples are countless and endless.
So how do we make, or get, our children to concentrate better? As parents we know that concentration is one of the keys to life long success. To be able to concentrate well in all we do in life, no matter what it is, can open windows and doors to opportunities life long.
As parents we know we need to do the hard yards on this concentration issue. We know we need to expose our children to activities – both educational and sporting – that promote concentration and focus.
Traditional Poomse in the Korean Martial Arts is a perfect activity to develop concentration. Besides developing strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility, Poomse delivers on concentration in a big way. Its one of those “must haves” for anyone looking to do a martial art, or for that matter, for anyone wanting to set their child up for life long success.
Enrolling your child in a martial art that teaches traditional poomse is a great gift any parent can give their child. However it wont be without some difficulty as children do find it a challenge as it requires focus and concentration – of course – the very thing that this activity develops! And because children often struggle for years with concentrating and on tasks at school, home and in their family and social life, they will find it every bit the same as they begin their life journey in the Martial Arts. The gains will be evident in time as parents encourage their children and support them as they grow towards excellence in Martial Arts.
Factor10 Martial arts is a leading Brisbane Taekwondo academy in the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwondo that teaches Poomse. In fact Factor10 had a student achieve 4th ranking in Individual Poomse at the World Championships in Korea and second place in the Pairs Poomse event.
